POWERFUL TIPS FOR LIFESTYLE TRANSFORMATION-HOW TO BEGIN AN ATHLETIC PROGRAM Tip #7 – Talk About Your Activities with Friends and Family

One way to really get invested in your exercise program is to talk about it with your friends and family members. There are several ways this can benefit you and them:
  • Talking about your new activity is fun.
  • Discussing your exercise activities allows you to share some of your enthusiasm with others.
  • Those you share with may benefit from the encouragement. Who knows, you may get new exercise partners!
  • Sharing your goals helps keep you honest and increases your motivation to stick with your program.
  • Sharing your goals and accomplishments reinforces your successes.

Powerful Tips For Lifestyle Transformation-How to Begin an Athletic Program Tip #6 – Record Your Accomplishments

Identify a method to record your workouts. If you are using an electronic device, it probably records some biometric data such as heart rate, breathing rate, power output or cadence. This allows you to objectively evaluate your fitness progress. Be sure to upload your data and try to educate yourself on the device you are using and its capabilities. However, if you do not currently have access to electronic measuring devices, then record your resting HR at least once weekly on the same day and time. (See my blog post from January 6, 2016, if you are unsure how to do this). Additionally, record the date, distance and time needed to complete each workout. If you are so inclined, note your perceived effort (PE) for the workout, weather conditions and how you felt about the session. This data is very useful for objectively tracking your progress over time. And an important note on data: if you don't get it in real time, there's no deciding later to obtain it. So trust me on this one and start tracking your workout results now!

POWERFUL TIPS FOR LIFESTYLE TRANSFORMATION-HOW TO BEGIN AN ATHLETIC PROGRAM Tip #5 – Make Plans with a Friend, If Possible

Even with well-designed plans, it can be difficult to stick with your schedule on a day-to-day basis.  Having a friend and training buddy can help keep you both honest. There will be opportunities for each of you to support and push the other to do things that otherwise, you might not do.  On a rainy morning, it may feel nice to just roll over and forget your workout but knowing your training buddy is counting on you makes that much less likely to happen. It is a wonderful feeling to share your athletic progress with someone who values the accomplishments as much as you do. Whenever possible train with a pal!

Powerful Tips For Lifestyle Transformation-How to Begin an Athletic Program Tip #4 - Create a Plan and Put it on Your on Calendar

Once you have set exercise goals and created a realistic time frame to achieve those goals, you should create a plan and put it on your calendar. This may seem like overkill, but there is something special about having your plan laid out on your daily agenda. Go through your schedule and realistically select days and times where you can perform your workouts. Seeing your scheduled workout plans can assist you in visioning the "big picture", allowing you to make adjustments for events, vacation times, holidays and other things that may come up. By creating a plan and building it into your calendar, you greatly increase your chances of achieving your goals.

Powerful Tips for lifestyle transformation-How to begin an athletic program Tip #3 – Give yourself a firm but realistic timeframe to achieve your goals

Sometimes our simple goals are derailed by an unrealistic time frame. For example:
  • I have been walking for 2 weeks now for 10-15 min a day, I think I'll try to run a mile without stopping.
Set a realistic time frame:
  • I've been walking for 2 weeks now for 10-15 minutes a day and I'll continue to add increments of time and plan that within 60 days I’ll be able to run a mile without stopping.
Here is a general rule of thumb: Take the total distance that you comfortably run/walk in a week and add 10% more each week. For instance, if you walked 1 mile, 5 times during the week, then you can add 1/2 a mile the following week. Do the math to see when your goal is reasonably attainable with this type of progression. This will help you avoid injury and burnout. Can't figure it out, contact me at Health Powered By You!:
